Refinishing Answers Return to Bath Surface Refinishing
Does Refinishing and Reglazing mean the same thing?
Yes – they both refer to the process of applying special coatings to your sink, bathtub, toilet, or other household fixture.
Why shouldn’t I just install a tub liner instead of refinishing?
Besides the typical cost for a tub reline shell and wall system can be up to 100% more than refinishing, a common problem is water getting trapped between the old tub and the liner when there are failures in the caulking. This can lead to mold build-up, odors, and a squishy floor feeling. The process takes more than one day, and if remodeling, you can’t match your sink and toilet if you’re updating your colors.
What fixtures and surfaces can be refinished?
All of them – the bathtub or shower, the sink, the toilet, and even countertops. Additionally, tile walls and shower stalls in good stable condition (not loose tile, water rotten walls, missing grout, etc) can also be refinished. Other household items like kitchen sinks and even appliances can be refinished too.
What colors can be applied to my worn-out tub?
Regardless of the original color of your tub or sink, modern coatings are available in a series of standard colors, and we can apply virtually any color you wish to complement your design. Special treatments are also available that can simulate marble and granite-like patterns, and other styles. Custom color matching and special finishes may carry an additional charge.
How long will my tub refinishing job take?
The condition of the tub surface typically determines how long it will take. A typical tub takes about 4 – 5 hours. Other factors such as extra protection and /or preparation may extend that time.
After refinishing, when can the tub be used again?
Bath-Tech recommends that you not use the tub until the next day – about 18 – 24 hours is recommended for proper curing.
When should refinishing of my tub be done?
If you are just doing the tub, it can be done at any time, however to prevent construction damage / chips / scratches, it is strongly recommended to refinish it after repairs and remodeling construction is done.
Does the refinished tub look “painted”?
Absolutely not. Because the modern coatings used, typically only a professional can tell the difference between a new fixture and one refinished by Bath-Tech.
Are there any environmentally friendly applications available?Yes! We have a “green” VOC compliant coating that is available. It does not deplete the ozone layer, emits a lower odor when applied and is 50% more impact resistant over conventional coatings.
How long does the refinishing coating last?
That depends on how much use and how well you care for your tub’s surface. With normal use and gentle care (see Care Tips), it should last 10 -20 years or more – just like a new tub. If your tub is used as a playground and you clean it with abrasive pads and chemicals, the life will be greatly reduced. Forget the stories about the coating peeling off after a year or two – that is caused by poor surface preparation and / or do-it-yourself kits applying substandard materials.
Can you add an anti-slip surface to the tub?
Yes – a textured finish is a Recommended Option installed on the tub floor before the refinish coat is applied. The integrated anti-slip surface is less visible and easier to clean than stickers and etched surfaces.
What don’t you do as part of the refinishing process?
Each job will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. We may do minor repairs of tile, caulking, grab bars, etc. Because of the multitude of problems that arise with (older) plumbing, we typically do not repair, replace, or remove any plumbing fixtures. Wall repairs, excessive loose tile, window repairs, remodeling, floor repair, moldings, custom accessories should be addressed prior to starting your Bath-Tech project.
Repair Answers Return to Bath Surface Repairs
What does “repair” mean?
Repairing usually means refinishing small undesirable surface blemishes to make them appear like the surrounding areas so you usually can’t tell there was any damage. This can include chips and gouges in the surface, cracks in shower floor, cigarette burns, dents, stains, deep scratches, etc.
What kind of surfaces can you repair?
Porcelain, acrylic, fiberglass, laminate, cultured marble, and Corian.
Is Bath-Tech a factory-authorized repair service company?
We are factory authorized service technicians for all major manufacturers including American Standard, Aqua Glass, Lasco, Floorstone, Jacuzzi, Maax, Aquatic, Ultra, Sterling, and Kohler.
How do you do repairs and how long will it take?
Repairs are generally done with similar processes as our refinishing and can easily be done in one short visit. Please review out Refinishing Answers section for more information.
I’m worried whether you can match the existing color – can you?
Don’t worry – color-matching is so accurate that rarely if ever can we not match a color. When completed, your repair should look just like the surrounding area.
My shower has a crack in the floor – can you fix it?
Yes – in most instances, a crack is a result of an improperly supported floor pan. With special processes and materials, we can support the area under the crack so it shouldn’t move, and then repair the crack and refinish it so it will look like-new.
Conversion Answers Return to Bath-to-Shower Conversions
What is a bathtub to shower conversion?
Converting a bathtub to a shower is done by cutting out a section of the side of the tub and inserting a fitted insert to cover the exposed edges of the opening. Then, blending of the edges and application of a special coating makes the opening look like the original tub.
Why would I want a bathtub to shower conversion?
People request bathtub to shower conversions for the ease, convenience, and increased safety of not having to set over a tub wall to enter the shower area. Slips and falls while your feet are wet are not only painful, but can be costly in medical bills, lost work, and temporary lost of full mobility. Shower conversions are popular with more mature persons and those with disabilities.
What tub types can you convert to a shower?
In less than a day, we can convert both steel and fiberglass, and single wall and double wall bathtubs. We can not convert Grandma’s claw foot cast iron tub.
Can you install a shower door on the new conversion?
Yes – custom-fitted glass shower walls and a shower door can be added for convenience over using a shower curtain. View www.cardinalshower.com for available items.
Can we convert the converted shower back to a tub?
Sorry, once a tub is converted to a shower, it can not reliably be converted back to a bathtub.
